I'm writing this newsletter to share what I've learned from deep dives into the experience of being human. I've been privileged to see life through three different lenses:
Research on human life: I'm a research scientist and I direct the Harvard Study of Adult Development, which has studied thousands of people in 724 families across 85 years. This research has given me a unique perspective on the common themes and challenges of human life.
Psychotherapy: I'm a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst, and I see patients every day. I've had the privilege of learning about individual lives in great depth. This work has taught me about the power of relationships, the importance of resilience, and the healing potential of human connection.
Zen meditation: I've been practicing Zen meditation and teaching Zen for over two decades. This practice has helped me to cultivate peace, compassion, and clarity. It has also given me a deeper understanding of the nature of mind and reality.
I used to believe that these roles of therapist, researcher, and Zen meditator were separate and needed to stay in their separate boxes. But over time, I've come to see how much rich overlap there is among all these ways of studying life. Because it is, after all, the same human life, no matter how we look at it.
